A chance to attend some of Beijing's best classical music and opera. This is a principal venue for concerts by both visiting and home-grown orchestras. At certain times of the year, the concert hall hosts folkdancing and traditional events.

DONGCHENG DISTRICT. A cabaret-style hall ideal for tourists who want to take in Peking opera, but with the added bonus that you can dine and drink at tables while the show is on. Built in 1937 in traditional Ming dynasty style, the theater is now state-of-the art and mainly offers performances based on Chinese mythology and history.

CHAOYANG DISTRICT. The culture center offers the chance to enjoy Chinese performing arts, especially the Shaolin warriors show. Although usually held in the early evening and inexpensive, performances vary in times and price, so check City Weekend guide for details.

CHAOYANG DISTRICT. One of the world's premier acrobatic troupes. You will be amazed by the flexibility, agility and downright daring of these acrobats. Good family entertainment. Performances nightly.

XUANWU DISTRICT. Peking Opera is one of the capital's must-see events. With its colorful costumes, elaborate make-up, slow dances and clashing gongs, Peking opera is the quintessential Chinese theatre. The Guildhall has been hosting performances since 1807. Of the dozens of venues offering this historic musical theatre, this is the most atmospheric.
